Best fly patterns for Steelhead fishing

In fly fishing, the fly pattern can make the difference between a successful catch and a disappointing outing. Try the following fly patterns for surefire steelhead success. When the water is clear, try using something in a purple or blue; if the water is off, such as on a cloudy day, go for black. If the water is moving briskly, attract attention with a stiff fly, such as General Practitioner, Poacher, or Skunk (all hair wings). If the water is calm, try a subtler Marabou, bunny leech, or spey. In the summer months, a bright Articulated Prawn or Polar Shrimp is a good bet. For the winter cold, try a Peacock Spey in darker colors. Geography can also be an important factor when selecting your fly pattern. Author and guide John Nagy recommends the Wiggle Stone (a stonefly nymph pattern) for northern Pennsylvania rivers. A simpler version is the Miracle Nymph.
