3M Floating Fly Line

Fly line can get pricey with a spool often costing $40-$50 at your local fly shop. Factor in the need for floating line, sinking line, double-tapered, sink tip and other varieties plus general line fatigue and you’ll realize fly line can be one of your larger ongoing expenses in the hobby. If you’re just getting started, a very cheap spool from Scientific Anglers (the type you may find at WalMart or other large retailers) can start at around $20 and will do the job as you get the hang of casting and working the fly. As you get more advanced though, you’ll want to step up to a higher quality line to suit the conditions and to ensure you emanate as natural action as possible while your fly is on or in the water.
